The Emblems that you collect in the game do serve a purpose, other than just looking good. The more Emblems you collect, the more items that are unlocked in what is called "The Black Market," which is run by a mysterious looking chao, and a half-fish standing next to him. The Black Market can be found in the Kindergarten. The more Emblems you unlock, the more items he has. This is where chao eggs, themes, hats, seeds, etc are bought.

It should also be noted, that (for whatever reason), whenever you need the Heart Fruit, the clerk seems not to have it. But when you don't have enough for it or don't want it, then he has it.
